"Inaul" is the traditional woven cloth of the Maguindanaon. It is the Maguindanao word for “woven”. With Inaul, Maguidanaon do not only provide us with colorful and intricately designed cloth. Inaul (also pronounced inol) is a time-honored weaving tradition of the Maguindanao people usually made into malong or wraparound skirts commonly and regularly used by both sexes. The Maranaos of Marawi City also has this weaving tradition.

What does Inaul symbolize?

Inaul is traditionally used as a “malong” but it is also considered as a “Bara-Bangsa”, a term that describes royalty, dignity, and nobility. In the past, the use of Inaul in Muslim Mindanao was a status symbol and worn with pride and respect. The color of the Inaul fabric reflects the vibrant culture of Maguindanao. What is Inaul made of? Today, the inaul is woven with cotton, rayon, and silk. Early weavers also used to weave with backstrap looms; now weavers use the hand loom. Traditional inaul patterns are passed on from generation to generation.

yellow and orange for royalty

black for dignity

green for peace

white for either mourning or purity
